Excellent tiny book with many, many words By Joseph Dewey This is a tiny picture book that has thousands, if not tens of thousands of words packed in. The index contains about 4500 words, but I'm sure there are actually loads more. It'll be one of the smaller books on your bookshelf, but there are 360 very compact pages with a lot of information. It's thematically arranged, and for example, there are two pages dedicated to baseball, two to bicycles, four for vegetables and four for fruits. And hundreds of other pages dedicated to many interesting topics. Each Spanish word has an English translation. I also really like how for some words it gives both a Latin American Spanish translation and a Spain Spanish translation. For example, the beans translates to los frijoles in Latin America and las alubias in Spain. But, there are also specific words for dozens of types of beans, like las habas for the fava beans.The pages are really high quality, and the pictures are bright and extremely vibrant. The pages are a little thicker than most pages, too, so it shouldn't tear much. The print is small because the book is small, though. I have pretty good eyes, so the small print didn't bother me, but if you have any kind of eye problems, you might not like this book very much.But overall this is awesome, and you really should add this to your library if you're learning Spanish. There are more useful words with pictures in this book than any other Spanish learning book that I've found.

Story I think that teaching and learning vocabulary visually is more akin to the way in which a child acquires it. The book is actually smaller than I imagined. It is still large enough to read, but I imagine it would be some 8x10 type large book. It is more like a 5 x 7 or so. I just checked an the listed specs (which no one would probably read) show it is about that size. The picture, however makes me think it is large. I only deducted 1 star for this reason. The book itself seems excellent!

They just packed so much into this little book - practically everything you use or are familiar with. The sections cover people, appearance, health, home, services, shopping, food, eating out, study, work, transportation, sports, leisure, environment, and includes a reference section for time, maps, seasons, numbers, weights and a section of useful phrases, antonyms and particles. And it's all covered in sections, tons of tons of everything.For example, under shopping is a subsection for la farmacia (drug store) and in that subsection, you receive the Spanish words for: dental care, feminine hygiene, deodorants, vitamins, pharmacy, pharmacist, cough medicine, herbal remedies, skin care, sunscreen, sunblock, insect repellant, wet wipes, tissue/Kleenex, sanitary napkin, tampon, panty liner, capsule, pill, medical measuring spoon, instructions, cream, ointment, gel, suppository, eye drops, eye dropper, syringe, needle, spray, powder,iron, multivitamins, disposable, medicine, pain killer, calcium, side effects, souble, laxative, sedative, magnesium, expiration date, dosage, diarrhea, sleeping pill, insulin, travel sickness pills, medication, throat lozenge and anti-inflammatory. That is one tiny part of "Shopping."Very, very thorough. If you want to know what it is, it's probably in this book!!! It's unlikely that you'd need anything else. No book would be more complete. I've bought a bunch of them and can say this is the best with some degree of certainty. :) I wish I'd found this sooner.I even learned words for things (like parts of a camera) that I don't know in English. :)As always with anything by DK, it is nicely laid out and every page is inviting.My only con is the book is small and chunky. That's really handy if you wish to carry the thing around, but I'd like it to be bigger. (It's about 5.5" across and 6.5" high, a smidge under an inch thick.)

30 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Monsters. Roller Girl Gangs. Cool Drugs. Sublimely written. Yep, it's perfect. By T. Sparks So you might have guessed by now that I loved The Blue Blazes. I guess I could stop right here and say "Just read the damn thing, already!" But since I'm already typing away, I guess I'll tell you why I love this book, and why this ought to be a primer that every aspiring author should read, an awesome example of what a well-written, well-paced story should look like. Some of you may have read this book, and maybe you didn't love it the way I did. You might be thinking to yourself, "I don't get it. What did she see in this book that I didn't?" Reading is a personal experience. Not everyone will connect with this book the way I did. But in this review I want to talk about the awesome things that Chuck Wendig did that can't be disputed. There are mad skills involved here, people. And I'm going to tell you about them.The story is very complex, but I'll try and give you a short synopsis: The setting is New York City, probably in the present day. Mookie Pearl is a hulking badass with a cleaver who works for the Organization, a suspect group of men who control the trade of a mystical drug called Blue, a powder derived from a mineral known as Cerulean that is mined in the tunnels far below the streets of New York. Mookie knows the truth about what really lurks below, since Blue opens the inner eye of those who use it, allowing them to see the monsters that sometimes come up through the tunnels from The Great Below.But Mookie's got problems. His grownup daughter Nora hates him and is trying to sabotage his business. (Plus, she wants him dead.) He hasn't talked to his ex-wife Jess in who knows how long. And he just found out that the Boss, the guy who runs the Organization, is dying of cancer and only has six months to live. He's named his grandson Casimir as his successor, but Casimir isn't thrilled about taking over. And so he asks Mookie to find the elusive (and probably non-existent) drug called Death's Head that might be able to cure the Boss. So begins Mookie's journey into the Great Below to search for Death's Head. But a series of unexpected events changes his plans, and Mookie must work with a motley group of gang members, drug addicts, and even his hateful daughter Nora in order to prevent the city from being taken over by the denizens from Below.Here's why I loved this book:The characters. This story has some of the best female characters I've ever run across. Let's start with Nora. I hated her in the beginning, because not only is she trying to double cross her father, but she poisons him in the first chapter! OK, so the poison only puts you to sleep, but still. She's a pretty rotten girl. But then, later on, she isn't all that rotten after all. She evolves. Wendig makes you hate her in the beginning, but by the end of the book, you feel for her. Another of my favorite characters is Skelly, a member of the girl-gang the Get-Em-Girls.Skelly is like many of Wendig's characters: tough, brave and kick ass on the outside, but soft and squishy on the inside. She and Mookie have quite the adventure together, and I loved every scene she was in.And Mookie. What can I say? He's a grumpy, sad and angry man who loves his daughter despite how nasty she is. But he has a heart of gold, and he'll do anything to save the people he loves.The world-building. This isn't the first story I've read about an underworld that lies beneath us and is straining to make its way out (hello, Buffy!! Hellmouth!!) But the New York setting adds a gritty quality to the story that would be lost in any other city. Wendig's detailed yet spare descriptions brought this world to life, from the dark tunnels filled with horrible monsters, to the town of Daisypusher where the dead hang out, to the deepest reaches of Hell, the Ravenous Expanse.My favorite world-building element, however, has to be the drugs. In addition to the Blue Blazes, there are four other drugs that make up the Five Occulted Pigments, and they may or may not exist.The writing. Chuck Wendig has a way with words. I honestly think if I were to read passages of The Blue Blazes out loud, flowers would bloom at my feet. He's got the best similes ever, and each one is better than the last. Not every reader will like his writing sytle--he uses lots of short, incomplete sentences--but in a story filled with graphic violence and death, his oftentimes beautiful prose is like a balm on a nasty burn.The pacing. Wendig does several smart things to keep things racing along. First, he sends Mookie on a journey to locate Death's Head. But along the way, Mookie gets sidetracked, and each new discovery leads him to another level of Hell, another secret hide-out, or another person who needs saving. His mission is still the same, but Wendig's added many more layers to it. He also fills in some of the world-building gaps by adding journal entries from a man named John Atticus Oakes at the beginning of each chapter. These short passages often mirror what Mookie and his friends are about to confront, and they give more insight into the mysterious world of Below.The emotional punch. Mr. Wendig tore out my heart and stomped on it. He made me hate characters, and then somehow made me love them. He promised things, then took them away. At the end of the book I felt as if I had been pummeled by the beefy fists of Mookie himself. It was an exhausting story, and yet I felt giddy at the end. And he just keeps things coming. You think the characters are out of danger, but then they're not. And so it begins again. The end was heartbreaking, and yes, there will be a sequel.The Blue Blazes is like a cabinet full of wonders--dark, damaged and twisted wonders--where the action never stops, the characters are always in danger, the writing is sublime, and emotions run high. Read this book. You won't regret it.Many thanks to the publisher for supplying a review copy.

The evil that once lived below the earth's surface now roams freely on the streets. When excavations of the bowels of the earth bring every scary thing that ever went bump in the night to the surface, they also uncover Cerulean, or Blue Blazes. This highly addictive drug makes people stronger, fiercer and able to see things for what they really are. The story is that of Mookie Pearl, a one man killing machine. He is a brute of a man working for one of the city's many gangs. He helps keep the goblin population under control, amongst more nefarious things. Needless to say, our hero, Mookie, is an addict as is his daughter, Nora, aka Persephone. Nora is out to punish her Dad and takes him and the reader on a wild but deadly goose chase across the city.So what do I think of The Blue Blazes? Do I think it is a superbly written, harrowing story of a father's love for his daughter? Yes I do. Do I think that Wendig is a master craftsman when it comes to dialogue and characterisation? Yes I do. Do I feel that Wendig pushes the boundaries, not just for characters but also for the reader? Yes I do. But did I enjoy The Blue Blazes? No I didn't. I have read Wendig's other books including both of the Miriam Black books and Double Dead. While I found his lead characters unlikable, there was still something about them, something desperate to do the right thing, that had me cheering them on from early in the story. I felt none of this for Mookie or his daughter Nora. They were both completely selfish and showed little regard for anything and anyone around them. Even a hint of redemption towards the end was not enough to sway me toward their corner. It wasn't until almost 3/4 of the way into the book that I became sufficiently gripped with the plot to not want to put the book down. In true Wendig style, the ending is a complete roller coaster to hell and back of action and mayhem.Despite not finding this a completely palatable read, I would still recommend The Blue Blazes. It's important as a reader to be challenged and that is certainly the case with this book. Wendig doesn't pull any punches, especially for his characters. I have said that both of the Miriam Black books were not for the faint hearted, and with The Blue Blazes I think I would have to say the same - but times 10 (possibly x100). If you are looking for something well written and verging towards horror, then I urge you to read The Blue Blazes. I would advise not to read too close to bedtime, however, without checking under the bed a few times first!

Neverwhere meets the Mob By Escapist Reads REVIEW COURTESY OF ALL THINGS URBAN FANTASYEvery once in awhile you come across a book that hits every sweet spot you have when it comes to fiction. THE BLUE BLAZES by Chuck Wendig is such a book.Seriously, folks, this book has everything I love. Mobsters! Monsters! Violence! Gratuitous swearing! In all honesty I'm certain that Wendig wrote this book especially for me. From page one to the very end I enjoyed every single word. Between THE BLUE BLAZES and TRICKSTER, 2013 is becoming an excellent year for gritty, awesome urban fantasy.Oh, yeah, so what's it about, you ask? The book centers (for the most part) on Mookie Pearl. Mookie works for the Organization. They're ones that control the supply of the titular "Blue Blazes" - a drug that gives you increased strength, endurance and the ability to see the denizens of the Underworld.In the first few chapters we find out that Mookie's daughter Nora has also been getting involved in the criminal underworld and that the Boss of the Organization is dying of cancer. The Boss tasks Mookie with finding the mythical drug known as Death's Head or The Purple. This one is believed to cure everything and quite possibly bring the dead back to life. This sets of a story that moves at break-neck speed as Mookie finds himself in the caverns and tunnels below New York as he searches for the Death's Head. He'll fight goblins, ghosts and a multitude of other creatures.The world of THE BLUE BLAZES is fantastic - think Neil Gaiman's NEVERWHERE written as a mob book - and as Wendig slowly reveals more and more of the demonic underbelly of New York you can't help but go along for the ride. At turns creepy and horrifying (but always entertaining), THE BLUE BLAZES is a must-read. I'm kicking myself for not checking out Wendig's work before now. Don't make the same mistake I did

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great study tool By Akif TPGenius, from what I see, is a fairly new company yet they've managed to produce a really good test prep book. As a tutor, I appreciate how they structured their math section: each topic has a short lesson (typically 1-2 pages long) followed by a heap of practice. Experience has shown me that students do better when they spend more time tackling problems and less time zoning out to me lecturing them.I deducted 1 star for the reading and grammar sections. While the book also gives short lessons for these topic, it lumps all the practice questions at the back rather than split them for each section (ie. the book shows how to tackle Words in Context questions and Analogical Reasoning questions, but does not provide any practice passages for these SPECIFIC sections). I'm a bit puzzled why they would do this for the math section but not for the reading.Overall, though, this is a good practice book that I recommend to students, teacher and tutors alike.

Each topic comes with 21 practice problem By GMath I am not usually this critical, but if you're going to use the word "Genius" in your company name, then this level in inaptitude is not acceptable. I will only speak about the math preparation because that's what I teach.Pro:Nicely categorized. Each topic comes with 21 practice problem, Quite enough to keep a student busy for a while.Con: Some of the answers are wrong.Some problems are just mislabeled. They might give C as an answer, but when you read the solution on their website, they clearly meant to mark B.Some mistakes are caused by poor editing. The numbers given in the solution are different from the numbers in the book.The worst kind of mistakes are what I meant by inaptitude. You can't forget to reverse the inequality when dividing by a negative number. You can't forget to distribute the negative sign when solving absolute value equations. You can't mess up PEMDAS when translating graphs. You can't make any of these mistakes if you want to be identified as a genius.On a somewhat related note, it almost seems one person is writing the problems while another is producing the answer key. The right answer is often given as a choice, which means the person writing the problems knows exactly how to correctly solve the problem.As far as customer service is concerned, they do not answer their email. I would be happy to share with them a list of the mistakes I've discovered so that they can put out a better product, but not if they don't respond to email.

As an English teacher, the grammatical errors made me cringe, and the factual inconsistencies were grating on the nerves, like nails on a chalkboard. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

As far as I know, only the Peterson's book contains real ACT tests. Also, this book claims to have 6 practice tests, but only three are in the book. You have to go online for the other three.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Average ACT advice; serious students will benefit more from other books By Vince Kotchian I've been tutoring the ACT for about eight years. Kaplan's ACT guide, like its previous editions, provides basic advice for the test, but fails to deliver by a wide margin on its claim that it's "all you need to get ready for test day."1. The book doesn't cover many English and Math concepts that will be tested, and those it does cover often do not offer enough practice for students to become proficient. Remedy: get books that focus on just one section of the ACT if you want in depth coverage and more practice.2. The practice question and test realism is not great. Remedy: practice with REAL ACT tests that are published by the ACT, not those written by third-party companies. Real ACT questions are generally harder, more complex, and most importantly, more reliable in terms of duplicating what you'll face on test day.3. The book offers one way to look at Science and Reading questions, but I find that students need to experiment with technique in these sections to find what works best for them. Remedy: be willing to use trial and error to find methods that work best for you.Overall, I'd urge serious students to look beyond this book and to particularly analyze real ACT tests, which are much closer to the real thing than the ones in Kaplan books.

By Amazon Customer I bought this book specifically to get information and strategies for the new format essay. The first thing I saw in that section was wrong: they said the essay is 30 minutes when in fact it is 40 minutes. As a result, I am not inclined to trust the material in this book, although in fairness I haven't reviewed the rest of it. I am considering returning it and waiting for something more reliable.

Gant tells Jack sometimes you need to speed up the process. "Well, that's because Wilson and Hauser are a bunch of pansy-ass wimps. Let me tell ya', I've been around for a lot longer than those two yahoos, and if you want to rise to the top, you'll have to actually take a life every once in a while," Enoch said calmly.Jack realizes he may have the power to change the future and the dreams he has when he falls asleep are enough to keep him awake for good.Jack realizes animals can see him, and this leads to comedic relief in this book."That's it? Boy, you've just come closer to time travel than any of the living population would believe, and all you can say is, "Yeah, sure?""No, I don't want to play God. I just think it's completely unfair that good people die when they shouldn't, while bad people continue to live.""Just remember that no one is dead yet, ...and what was up with the wink afterward?" I enjoyed this book the best so far in this series.

Winn If you haven't read any of the books in this amazing series you are missing out not only on a great theme, but a well told story. Imagine if you will having the job as a soul collector, the author has done this and a whole lot more in this intriguing series. I hope readers will grab all the books and then loose themselves ib the series that is so well written and compelling, I hope the author keeps it going for a long time. The series would make an amazing conversion to a television series as readers follow along with the unusual and supernatural collections made.I love the humor added as Jack learns the trade and as author Paul B. Kohler takes readers on an unusual and amazing thrill ride.

Another Perfect Addition to "Borrowed Souls" By Tracy Jillard This episode had me biting my nails and sitting on the edge of my seat, especially when the character I believe was the antagonist made his appearance. Nothing he did or said,was really creepy, but it was the way he didn't do or say many things that made him so creepy. Then there are Jack's Rosary adventures, and so much more. Another perfect addition to the "Borrowed Souls " collection. Waiting with bated breath for the next installment!
