I love his illustrations and I wish him all the best.I have a problem, however, with the lack of Eric Litwin's writing in the newer Pete the Cat books, so I'm writing this for the benefit of those shopping for a certain style. If you are looking for the rhyming, sing-songy style of Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons, you'll not see it here.I'm a school librarian and our younger students love to sing along with "I'm rocking in my school shoes," and they relish the repetitive "Did Pete cry? Goodness, no." I love the earlier books for their pictures, but I got hooked because of the writing style. So, I feel like someone baited me into loving Pete the Cat and then changed it while I wasn't looking. The books that were written by Eric Litwin (and illustrated by the very-talented James Dean) were:Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons,Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes,Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes, andPete the Cat Saves Christmas. If, however, you have a train-loving child and are interested in any train-related book, this is cute and affordable.

This is a nice story for emerging early readers, as the illustrations help children to understand any new vocabulary that they don't know. In this book, Pete explores a train and tells his story about travelling to see his grandma. My ESL students really latched on to and understood the concept and had great discussions after they read it. Great little learning tool. Fun illustrations!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Is My Favorite Pete the Cat By Pop Bop The Pete-the-Cat books in general are our favorites in the "My First Level, I Can Read!" series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but he has an antic hip vibe that bests those staid franchise bedrocks.Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are satisfying. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. Many of the other Pete books have a mild message, (be yourself, do your best), but this one is mostly just a train adventure story that emphasizes curiosity, being friendly, and having new experiences. For a relatively short pre-chapter book Pete's encounters on the train are pretty varied and wide ranging. So, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.

Best Ebook PDF Online Latent Variable Modeling with R, by W. Holmes Finch, Brian F. French

This book demonstrates how to conduct latent variable modeling (LVM) in R by highlighting the features of each model, their specialized uses, examples, sample code and output, and an interpretation of the results. Each chapter features a detailed example including the analysis of the data using R, the relevant theory, the assumptions underlying the model, and other statistical details to help readers better understand the models and interpret the results. Every R command necessary for conducting the analyses is described along with the resulting output which provides readers with a template to follow when they apply the methods to their own data. The basic information pertinent to each model, the newest developments in these areas, and the relevant R code to use them are reviewed. Each chapter also features an introduction, summary, and suggested readings. A glossary of the text’s boldfaced key terms and key R commands serve as helpful resources. The book is accompanied by a website with exercises, an answer key, and the in-text example data sets.

Latent Variable Modeling with R:

-Provides some examples that use messy data providing a more realistic situation readers will encounter with their own data.

-Reviews a wide range of LVMs including factor analysis, structural equation modeling, item response theory, and mixture models and advanced topics such as fitting nonlinear structural equation models, nonparametric item response theory models, and mixture regression models.

-Demonstrates how data simulation can help researchers better understand statistical methods and assist in selecting the necessary sample size prior to collecting data.

-www.routledge.com/9780415832458 provides exercises that apply the models along with annotated R output answer keys and the data that corresponds to the in-text examples so readers can replicate the results and check their work.

The book opens with basic instructions in how to use R to read data, download functions, and conduct basic analyses. From there, each chapter is dedicated to a different latent variable model including exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), multiple groups CFA/SEM, least squares estimation, growth curve models, mixture models, item response theory (both dichotomous and polytomous items), differential item functioning (DIF), and correspondance analysis. The book concludes with a discussion of how data simulation can be used to better understand the workings of a statistical method and assist researchers in deciding on the necessary sample size prior to collecting data. A mixture of independently developed R code along with available libraries for simulating latent models in R are provided so readers can use these simulations to analyze data using the methods introduced in the previous chapters.

Intended for use in graduate or advanced undergraduate courses in latent variable modeling, factor analysis, structural equation modeling, item response theory, measurement, or multivariate statistics taught in psychology, education, human development, and social and health sciences, researchers in these fields also appreciate this book’s practical approach. The book provides sufficient conceptual background information to serve as a standalone text. Familiarity with basic statistical concepts is assumed but basic knowledge of R is not.

By John Sakaluk I was very excited to buy this book--I got a deal on the hardcover version, and was looking forward to the authors' attempt to provide a one-stop-shop [book] for conducting and interpreting different types of latent variable analyses in R. Though I have a few generalizable impressions of the book as a whole, I was left with some VERY different feelings (some positive, some negative) about different portions of the book. Specifically, I felt like the book provided pretty unsatisfactory coverage of topics I was already knowledgeable about (in my case, the chapters on more "traditional" forms of latent variable analysis, like EFA, CFA, and SEM), but alternatively, provided much better coverage of the topics I knew little about (e.g., LCA, and IRT). Perhaps this is a problem faced by all books that strive to be broadly comprehensive, and yet accessible. If you want to know more specifics, my feelings about the book as a whole, and then the traditional and untraditional latent variable analysis chapters (separately) are below.tl;dr: consider buying this book if you want a very preliminary conceptual/practical introduction to any/all of these analytic methods, but if you know what your analytic needs are, I feel as though there are much more helpful books available (for both beginners and experts).Overall-I disliked the first chapter of the book; can authors of forthcoming R-based stats books stop pretending that new R users can be taught enough base R in 9 pages? It's not gonna happen. That's why books like R Cookbook (O'Reilly Cookbooks) exist. The space would be much better used to provide more depth elsewhere.-The omission of guidance for when to model latent continuous variables (as in EFA/CFA/SEM) vs. when to model latent categories (as in LCA) seems like a huge missed opportunity. The two approaches can often provide interpretable solutions for the same dataset, and new users will crave an answer to the very intuitive question of "...so how do I choose between a good-fitting interpretable categorical vs. continuous model?".-Equations make regular appearances throughout the book. Sometimes these are helpful (e.g., calculation of model fit indexes) but many other times they are not (e.g., what beginner is going to understand the maximum likelihood or diagonally weighted least squares criteria?)-The simulation chapter at the end of the book felt pretty unhelpful. Simulation is not something, in my opinion, that the authors' target market will want to do all that often, and at least for continuous latent variable simulations, there are MUCH more user-friendly means to carrying out simulations (check out the simsem package) than the approach taken by the authors.-A nit-picky point, but I wasn't a huge fan of how the authors formatted their R code within the chapters; aesthetically, it left much to be desired in terms of easy-reading, especially compared to some other books on this topic.-One big strength of the book, as a whole, is that I think it does a very good job of accessibly describing the different types of latent analyses one might consider; it's a pretty effective conceptual introduction.Traditional Latent Variable Analysis Chapters (Chapters 2-7 [overall dislike])-The EFA chapter (Chapter 2) is not great. Why try to teach beginning R users three separate functions (factanal, fa [in psych package], and princomp), when one of them (fa) possesses all of the functionality (and then some [err, a lot]) of the other two!? This needlessly complicates users' lives. And while some of the conceptual overview of EFA is okay, I'd still recommend Exploratory Factor Analysis (Understanding Statistics) for that purpose over this book any day of the week.-The CFA chapter (Chapter 3) is also, in my opinion, not great. First, zero coverage is given to the crucial conceptual matters of identification and scale-setting--I just don't see how you can attempt to teach new users CFA/SEM without covering these features of model specification at all (and they have hugely impactful downstream consequences for SEM...). There also are some mistakes (e.g.,(1) RMSEA, (2) SRMR, (3) CFI, and (4) TLI are all presented as "relative" indices of model fit, but the first two are "absolute" indices) that eventually lead to confusing organizational decisions (e.g., why teach those four indices in the order of (1), (3), (4), (2), when (1/2) and (3/4) are both computationally and interpretably similar?). I will say, though, that I very much appreciated the discussion and code for evaluating multivariate normality assumptions. But if I'm stuck recommending an R book for CFA/SEM, my money is still heavily on Latent Variable Modeling Using R: A Step-by-Step Guide.-The SEM for Multiple Groups chapter (Chapter 5) also could have benefited from some simpler code selection; the semTools package for R has a measurementInvariance function that fits each of the models described in their chapter with a singleton line of code, and automatically performs the subsequent nested model comparisons for the user.-The Growth Curve Modelling chapter (Chapter 7), like the one in the Beaujean book (link above), is a pretty sparse introduction to longitudinal SEM (e.g., no discussion of the importance of longitudinal measurement invariance). I'll simply leave it at this: if you are really serious about learning how to specify growth curves or other longitudinal models in SEM, get Longitudinal Structural Equation Modeling (Methodology in the Social Sciences)"Untraditional" Latent Variable Analysis Chapters (Chapters 8-10)-As someone with no training in LCA, and long-forgotten training in IRT/MIRT, these chapters were actually very helpful for (re)learning the conceptual and practical nuts and bolts of these types of models, and it was especially informative to learn of packages for fitting them in R. Although it wouldn't surprise me if these chapters suffered some of the same limitations as the previous section, for someone without that higher-level knowledge, these chapters seem totally helpful for at least gaining a sense of what these models involve, and pointing towards some helpful and more detailed/comprehensive resources.

I have completed Chapter 6 By ieee488 I have purchased close to half a dozen books for learning Android App development.I would say that *for me* this one fits the best.I have completed Chapter 6, and I could easily use it as an example to write a simple app for my local animal rescue by replacing drinks with pets. I did find the explanation on page 241 abou the OnItemClickListener to be puzzling. The authors writes that it is a nested class, but even Google's own documention says that it is an interface. I found the explanation at --- programmerinterview.com/index.php/java-questions/java-anonymous-class-example/ --- to be helpful.I will be editing this review as I continue reading the rest of the book.EDIT (October 16, 2015)===I skipped chapter 8 which teaches nested fragments and continued on to chapter 9 which develops a new app.Because Google has switched over to Material as the new theme, the Action Bar icon pack is no longer available for download at the link mentioned on page 379 of the book.I was able to find a download link that still worked.Since Amazon won't let me put a link, I suggest Googling for Android_Design_Icons_20131106.zipEDIT (October 16, 2015) part #2===No matter what I did, the ic_action_new_event icon would not appear in the Action Bar.I had to go to File --> Project Structure. Then single-click on the entry 'app' in the left-side box under Modules. Then in the larger middle box, single-click the Dependencies tab. Then single-click on the entry that has the phrase 'appcompat'; my entire entry was com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3.After that entry is highlighted, click on the red minus sign on the right-side box.Android Studio automatically includes the Android Support Library v7 into a new project. Mine does. My Android Studio is 1.2.1.1After you do this, take note of the last few paragraphs on page 378 in the book.EDIT (October 19, 2015)===I found it wasn't necessary to remove com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3 from my project.Make certain that all the items in menu_main.xml have android:showAsAction instead of app:showAsActionAndroid Studio will draw red squiggly lines under each of them.Ignore those red squiggly lines. The app will run fine.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great book. Highly recommended. By travelreader I'm almost finished with my second read of this new Head First book. It's an excellent introduction. Like the HF Design Patterns book, there is something about the detailed approach to conveying complex information that really does the job. It's engaging and progresses with those little steps, repeatedly, to drive home essential Android skills. I've been programming in Java for over a year, have taken four OOP courses, including Java, in college, and have read many books on Java and related topics. This works. It is not cartoonish by any means and a great first step; highly detailed, with arrows and explanations that leave no (beginner) stone unturned. Android programming is not that easy, to my surprise. But beware: you better know your Java.

By Amazon Customer It is always fulfilling to learn about the world's history and how our veterans fought for us to be alive today. This book was written to educate millions of people around the world of the wars that happened in Vietnam many many years ago. I gave 5 stars for content, consistency, wealth of information and spot on documentary. I can remember in high school being bored in history class and today I can't believe I can say that I red this book from cover to cover. Thumbs up to you Mr James Weber for educating young people today about the Wars of Vietnam. Absolutely love this book and will be apart of my history collection. I Highly Recommend to the History lovers!!

Brant James does an outstanding job of taking an extremely complex conflict in Vietnam and breaking it down into 50 events. I should be surprised at the quality of this book since he has several other high quality books in the same series. With 50 key events, you get enough of the story line that you don't need an endless pile of facts and dates. Rather, most events can be summed up by looking at the key events that determined the flow of history. Brilliantly written and easy to read, this book is perfect for anyone who is studying the Vietnam war or simply wants a better understanding of this important historical event.

In fact, I am most inclined to the study of history, so any book on this topic is much appreciated. This is one interesting and detailed book about the Vietnam War. Some of the events here were not mentioned during my previous history classes, this is a new learning for me. I think that it is also complete, since it has taken readers to the most crucial events of the Vietnam War, from before the beginning of the war after World War II until its end in 1975. Comprehensive!

This is the story of a woman who will do anything for her family. Cassie Powell is a successful small business owner with a local bakery and an adopted little girl. Her life isn't easy but she is content. Then Jack Martin, a man she has had a crush on her whole life comes back to town. Jack, Cassie and her sister grew up together. Jack dated her sister but they broke up while at college. When Jack goes to visit with Cassie, he realizes that she has grown into a fabulous woman and can't get her off his mind. He had always thought of her as a little sister but not anymore. This is a good, sweet romance that has some twists and turns that keep things interesting. This is the first book I have read from Christine Kingsley but it won't be my last I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Don't want to give away any of the secrets of the book but I highly recommend it.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Emotional By Lenna WB Old friends turned lovers, secrets to shocking to be told, painful truths are spoken are just some things that you will read. This story will get the tears going when secrets are revealed and true heart breaking ments and words are spoken. I thought it would end in a cliffhanger when are 97% and the couple still are made and hurt but it did get to their HEA ending, can't wait to see what the next book will have and if we get to catch up with Cassie and Jack Martin.Warning of you are looking for steamy action other then some making out you won't find any sex is this romance.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved It! By Susan D I loved this book. It is such a sweet romance, but that does not mean that everything is all sweet as sugar throughout. Jack has returned home to find Cassie, the sister of his ex girlfriend, all grownup, and he suddenly has other feelings, instead of sisterly feelings for her, but she has big secrets that she is keeping from him. As usual with secrets, these secrets end up causing lots of problems. As this relationship develops, and the truth comes out, it is the sweetest thing to watch. This is a well written book. I received this book from the author in return for an honest review. If you like a really good romance, I highly recommend this book.
