2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Grab up this series now! By Kathy Cilley I have read all of this authors books and I love all his work, but I have to say this series is my favorite. There is action, suspense, friendship, terror, humor and the love parents have for their children. It is an easy read which will keep you up late at night, but you won't mind. I love all the different characters, good and bad. They become your friends on this journey. I say buy this boxed set. Thanksgiving break is coming and you can snuggle up with a cup of hot tea, blanket in a comfy chair. Let yourself go away in this series world. You're welcome.

Once you catch this disease, you'll be hooked By Kira L I believe it necessary to start with this - I absolutely HATE the zombie hype that has saturated the market for quiet some time now. I simply can't wrap my head around idiots running from, or subjecting themselves to, mindless beings that bite. This said, I was skeptical when picking up the Alpha Plague series. True to Mr. Robertson's style, he added his own flare and twist. With the Alpha Plague series 1-3, he presents a fabulous depiction of what could be if biological warfare became more creative and sinister..... I am hooked and those who know me can't believe it.Alpha Plague begins with Rhys, an out-of-shape pathetic desk jockey, focused on seeing his six-year-old son (Flynn) more often. Suddenly, his world is severely altered with an explosion, screams, and a beautiful stranger breaking through his funk to save him. Vicky hesitantly teams up with Rhys to escape Summit City's rapidly growing diseased population and reconnect with his son. Once out, they learn the diseased have escaped the Summit City, Flynn is saved, and then the words "what about mum" are uttered..... Back to the city Rhys goes while Vicky babysits Flynn nearby. Rhys saves his ex Larissa with the help of a mysterious limping liar who calls himself Oscar. Finally, each are pushed beyond their physical limits to reconnect with Vicky and Flynn while avoiding becoming one of the diseased.It was the consistent use of "diseased" instead of "zombies" (actually mocking the zombie genre in a way and making a East vs West Cold War more serious and dramatic), the fast pace, and the unexpected twist of sympathy and pact mentality between the diseased that keep me reading. On to the 4th installment .....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. apocalyptic survival thriller done right By Jaffa Kintigh Robertson condenses and stretches time, appropriately and necessarily, to capture the first minutes, hours and days in a zombie apocalypse. Falling within the broader category of zombie apocalypses, this take is toward the rage spectrum of "28 Days Later" rather than the lumbering Walking Dead variety, which makes it all the worse for protagonist, Rhys. The entire trilogy barely clocks in at 2 days in character time. Wonderfully, the narration style morphs as time goes on and characters have moments to consider their complicated pasts that overshadow their decisions and actions of the present. I've reviewed each book separately, too. "The Alpha Plague" [#1] is an apocalyptic survival thriller that covers just the first few hours of a viral plague: Rhys and his kick-ass partner-by-circumstance Vicky in his quest to escape Summit City, the apocalypse epicenter, and save his 6 y.o. son, Flynn, who’s at school some miles away. The second installment picks up minutes after the end of the first book. Rhys promises his son to try to save his wife back in Summit City, thus launching this sequel which focuses on Rhys’ efforts while Vicky stays safely outside the containment zone with the boy. Rules for the behavior and spread of zombies start to emerge as Rhys logs more interactions and analyzes more without Vicky’s smarts to guide him. Also, the political intrigue storyline at the heart of the infection develops, broadening the world-view while layering on mysteries.The third installment keeps the frenetic pace of the previous ones, while weaving in back story for Vicky as Rhys and Larissa try to find Vicky and Flynn. In alternating chapters, over a year of backstory infills Vicky’s tale while only Rhys and Larissa’s tale furthers the present everchanging predicament. The unspooling of multiple time lines and shifting character relationships in Vicky’s political thriller thread reminded me of "All the Old Knives" by Olen Steinhauer.This series is highly recommended.

The material covered in this book correlated well with the content on the actual exam. I wish I could've done better on the cardiovascular section but I don't know if I would have done as well without this book. Great buy.

About the Author Mitchel S. Berger M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S. is the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and is an expert in the fields of neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. He also serves as Director of UCSF's Brain Tumor Research Center.After graduating from Harvard University in 1974, Dr. Berger earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed a clinical fellowship in neuro-oncology at UCSF, a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children of the University of Toronto, and his neurosurgical residency at UCSF. In 1986, he became Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, after which he was named Associate Professor (1990) and Professor (1996). Dr. Berger has clinical expertise in treating adult and pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors. He is a pioneer of intraoperative brain mapping - a technique used to avoid functional areas of the brain during surgical resection of a tumor. His work has enabled surgeons to perform more extensive resection of tumor with less chance of producing sensorimotor or language deficit.Dr. Berger is a leader of translational research and is the Principal Investigator of the UCSF Brain Tumor Research Center's Specialized Program of Research Excellence in neuro-oncology, funded by the National Cancer Institute. His specific research interests lie in identifying molecular markers related to the progression and prognosis of glial tumors, as well as the development of small-molecule therapeutic agents that can be administered directly to the brain via convection-enhanced drug delivery. During his distinguished career, Dr. Berger has served as President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Society of Neuro-Oncology, President of the North Pacific Society of Neurology, and Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has also been a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is currently President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. In 2009, Dr. Berger was awarded the prestigious Winn Prize by the Society for Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as a member of the National Football League Head, Neck and Spine Committee, focusing on retired players' issues and examining the consequences of repetitive head injury and concussion. He is also an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Organization for Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. A prolific author, Dr. Berger has contributed over 500 scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, has edited 6 textbooks, and has written over 80 chapters on various neurosurgical topics. By Heidi Ellie and Stacie are ready to take on their next case. They have been hired to investigate a death in the elegant and quite haunted Lathrop Grand Hotel. The hotel has hosted and entertained guest for one hundred and fifty years. The Lathrop has one famous ghost, Stabby Abby, a Confederate nurse who reportedly slashed the throats of Union Soldiers. Abby has been around for years, but for whatever reason, the paranormal activity has reached a new and dangerous level. Recently when construction workers were renovating the mysterious fourth floor, things turned deadly. Has Abby continued her murderous ways?What I Liked:*I am always thrilled to plunge into the next Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper Series because I know I will get an exciting and creepy tale with plenty of ghosts and history as well as fun gadgets and gizmos for capturing ghosts. If you are a fan of real life ghost hunters, this is a fun series that you need to check out.*One of the things I love the most about this series is that all of the hauntings have a long and interesting history. I always enjoy when Ellie goes digging into the past to uncover who is behind the haunting and why. The series is set in Savannah, a city with a long, ghostly history, and I often wonder if Mr. Bryan uses real life ghost tales for the books.*House of Whispers was my favorite book in the series to date. What made this book exciting was that it was set in a hotel with a long and sordid history. It has many ghosts from different eras. For instance, there is Stabby Abby, the hotel's most notorious ghost who haunts room 208. Abby was a young Confederate nurse who slashed the throats of enemy soldiers. Along with Abby, there are numerous Union Soldiers, as well as some yellow fever victims. Then there are the dangerous ghosts up on the fourth floor from the twentieth century. This group of ghosts in life were dabbling in spiritualism, psychic energy and other dangerous paranormal activity. It is up to Ellie and Stacie to sort through the hauntings and determine who is causing the problems. I thought the hotel was an excellent setting, with its long history and deaths, it was a creepy backdrop.*I love the relationship between Ellie and Stacie. They work well together, and balance each other perfectly. Ellie is straight forward, serious and she is very aware of how dangerous her job is. Stacie is the opposite. She is more carefree and upbeat. She is quick to crack a joke or a smile, and she is a bit wacky. I enjoy watching them work together to trap the ghosts. Along with Jacob, the psychic, they make a terrific team. Speaking of Jacob, he continues to be fascinating. I always look forward to his psychic readings of each haunted spot.*The ending is fast, furious and shocking. I have to admit, I didn't see it coming. It was a whirlwind. However, once the dust settled, I was completely satisfied with the way it all went down. I also love that this series refrains from cliffhangers. You get a complete ghost mystery with each book, which makes them all the more addictive. Yes, you can pick them up and read them out of order, but of course, they read best in sequential order.And The Not So Much:*This book picks up a theme from the last book regarding Ellie's boss wanting to sell the business. While there is a bit of development with that story line, I was left hanging. I was hoping for more resolution.*While I loved that the ending caught me off guard and that it was a bit of a shocker, I wish that the reader had been clued into Ellie's reasoning. I wanted a better understanding as to what tipped her off as to who the real villain was. I was confused as well over how the young girl was kidnapped. Was she taken from her room or from somewhere else and how? I also wanted a bit more aftermath.*I adore Jacob and Michael, and I keep hoping that we will get a bit more romance. We need more of the guys.House of Whispers is my favorite book in the series to date. I loved the creepy setting, and the abundance of ghosts from different eras. This is a highly addictive series, and I appreciate that you can pick one of the books up and read it in a couple of hours and get a full story. If you are wanting a ghostly read on the realistic side, this is the perfect series for the Fall season. If you love ghosts, you must read these books!I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ellie and the gang back at work By M.Mak I must start by saying that I really enjoy the Ellie Jordan series. I'm a true paranormal ghost lover and Ellie is a fantastic character. This book was as good as the rest have been. It had a bit of a different feel to it than the others have, though. I'm not quite sure what it was, perhaps that she was working with the agency that's looking to buy them out. Maybe it's because there were a whole lot more ghosts this time around, I'm not sure. It just didn't feel quite up to par to me. It was still very enjoyable, it just felt different. It is quite a bit darker subject matter and seems heavier. Now that I've talked through it a bit, that's most likely what it was I was feeling. As I said, it's not bad, it just has a different feel to it.Ellie is as sharp as ever. Stacey is as cute and peppy as always. Grant is as dapper and Southern as you expect. I always wish there was more of him. He's such a fun character and always makes me smile.We do learn a bit more about the agency looking to purchase Eckhart Investigations. It will be interesting to see what happens with that next. A lot of things come out during this book that call into question the other agency. Not that we didn't question them already, but now it's even more suspect.I will continue to read this series. It's one that I really enjoy and it makes me happy that each case is wrapped up at the end of each book. No cliffhangers here. The only cliffhanger is the future of EI, but I think Ellie will make sure things are under control. Definitely a book to pick up if you enjoy the series, and if you like ghosts and the paranormal, grab any of the series and get comfy!

By Contagious Reads So my least favorite part of the book is when I flipped to the back page and it said ***spoiler alert*** Ellie Jordan #6 wouldn't be out until Feb!!!!Seriously!I don't want to wait that long!Everything before that was pure Ellie Jordan magic. I love that these books are scary as hell, funny, and have a little bit of romance. Ellie and Stacey have the best friend chemistry I've seen in a long time. It's nice to see two women who are friends with each other in literature. Usually a kickbutt heroine like Ellie is a lone wolf or only hangs out with dudes. I love watching their relationship grow as the series progresses.Each haunted world is fleshed out and built with enough intrigue to keep turning the pages. I love spooky haunted places from the comfort of my own home, and J.L. Bryan delivers time and time again.If you're in the mood for spooky reads then pick up the Ellie Jordan series, it's definitely one of my favorites

BUT, there's only one thing standing in his way...and that my friends is the red-headed beauty that seems to have crept and made residence in his heart....Aurora...Sky; OMG.! although he took a slight back seat in the beginning he certianly knew how to make an entrance back in the book, one that screams "look who's back" and this is why I'm so torn on which dude to pick, I feel sorry for poor Aurora's heart.Obviously things start to go haywire when in space, folk start dying, secrets are being kept, and trust/friendships are put to the testCan this bunch of training cadets learn of the virus and possibly find the cure?Will they all survive?Will Zane get the answers he's been searching for? Throw in two incredibly hot men who are fighting for her affections and you’ve got a book filled with glorious tension.I loved Aurora’s character in THE APOLLO ACADEMY but she’s even more of a badass in this novel. She’s dug deep and found her place among the stars and won’t let a life-threatening virus stand in her way. She’s smart, strong, funny, and able to hang with the best astronauts this side of the galaxy. And she’s an all around delight to cheer for throughout the book.Chase not only gave us a great cast of characters with their own unique voices, but she filled the book with a believable and incredibly visual futuristic setting. She has such a knack for constructing worlds that are both breathtaking in their beauty and fascinating in their technological advancement. I have only one real complaint, I don't like waiting for each book to be written. It took almost 2 years for the second book in this series! And, I just found out about the second book by checking, Amazon did not notify me. So, at the end of the day, my complaints are not about the book, it is about the lack of an immediate 3rd book.In any case, the story/series so far deserves an earned 5 stars. And, I still have to wait to see which man wins, although I am already speculating it will be the pilot instead of the wiz kid. However, since I do not know the author, I am only guessing. Therefore, my final statement to the author, hurry up with that third book!

What I got from this book is a new way to pass the time and allow my creative juices to flow! I've been using it at work and when my eyes need a break from staring at computer screens. This book was a great introduction for me since I am the “absolute beginner” as written in the title. The book is broken up into the benefits of zen doodle, how to do it, tips, etc. What I found most relaxing is that the author says mistakes are not allowed to be erased in Zen Doodle! We must be focused so we don't make mistakes. And when we do? Adapt by incorporating the mistakes into the pattern. Ultimately the book did lead me to creating relaxing and satisfying zen doodles. I'll be sure to pass this read onto other people!

I used to doodle a lot when I was a young mom and would be put on hold with companies. Letters were my favorite, who knew it would become a fad later on. Haven't had a good doodle in a while so will be nice to reconnect with that side of me

Concise framework for anyone new to creating ebooks on Amazon By musicalsoup I picked up Phil's first book and when I saw this book, I grabbed it within seconds. My personal preference is audio books, so I was THRILLED to see within the first few pages that Phil also includes a link to the audio book! Unannounced bonus!In this book, Phil shares his "just an average guy" experience with us creating, publishing, and promoting his ebooks. His down-to-earth tone is reassuring for any of us who aren't quite sure we can do it. He walks us through his successes and failures in getting books written, uploaded, and ranked on Amazon.The book offers a great introduction to someone like me who has been kicking around the idea of writing an ebook for a while but didn't know the first thing. I learned how easy it is to upload an ebook to Amazon using MS Word, what to include in an intro and conclusion, what NOT to include (based on Phil's experience and reviews), how to use keywords in titles, what fonts to use and avoid, cover design suggestions, choosing Amazon categories, and how to outsource some of the work if help is needed.If you have a blog or course, you'll definitely have an advantage and Phil tells you how to leverage your existing content.
