Lee Just from reading the first couple of chapters you know Rupert Wong is man who has done wrong in the past and is about to do even more wrong – and that’s not even counting the fact he cooks humans for a living.Rupert Wong starts the story as a simple chef who turns humans into delicious tartare and other delicacies. But as the plot quickly develops it becomes clear a religious war is erupting in the mean streets of Kuala Lumpur and our protagonist becomes inextricably tied at the center of it all.As the story progresses, Rupert is pulled every which way by players in the divine world. Though he's a puppet, ultimately his decisions are driven by his self interest and desires.Rupert feels remorse and regret for certain things he’d done and about to do, but he’s not driven by moral obligations. He takes on a form of community service not out of the goodness of his heart, but to avoid toiling in hell. Similarly, Rupert dives headlong into an investigation not to bring justice and the truth to light, but for money and promises.In these ways Rupert is relatable as an entirely fallible person caught up in things so much bigger than himself.The pacing of the novella is frenetic with twists at every turn and never stopping for a moment. It’s a great fast read filled with exotic backdrops and deities characterized in ways you’d never expect for their godly statuses. Cassandra paints a vivid picture of Kuala Lumpur brimming with smells and tastes – though, be warned: the author expends equal amounts of rich detail to describe delectable morsels of food as she does a rotting corpse.

By James Palmer An energetic, dark, often funny romp through the Malay-Chinese spirit world (with an appearance by the Furies). Khaw doesn't stint on the gore or horror, but also has a deft touch with the dubious gender politics of Malay folklore and a keen eye for the chaos and hustle of the city. A believable, likeable main character in Rupert Wong, the unfortunate ex-gangster trying to pay off his karmic debt, and a heaping of fascinating side characters make this what is hopefully only a first entry into a longer story for Wong (and which already ties into the wider Gods and Monsters universe)

By Benjamin White "Rupert Wong, Cannibal Chef" and its entertaining, oft-meddlesome characters, enchanting locations, and fairly unique approach to the occult is perfect if you're looking for a fun, quick -- if sometimes a bit gross (as you may guess by the title) -- read that will keep you turning pages until the end.Speaking of the characters, they actually surprised me a bit as, unlike so many novellas, every single one seemed to have so much, well, character. From Rupert, chef to the cannibal stars (a description that sounds more glamorous than it should), paranormal seneschal, and ex-gangster, to his wife Minah, who let's just say is in a very interesting state, all the way to the god of Hell himself, the characters make me wish only one thing: that I'll be reading more about them soon. I could even see various spin-off stories centered around some of the side characters.If I had one criticism of Cassandra Khaw's work here, it would be that, at rare moments, a combination of somewhat dense prose, mythology, and references to Malaysian culture and places would cause me to pause for just a second to parse what I was reading. This does not really break the flow of things, but, in contrast with the rest of Khaw's smooth storytelling and presentation, these moments did stand out. Also, to be fair, these moments might not be noticeable at all to someone more familiar with the culture of the region than I am.All in all, I would definitely recommend this story of one cannibal chef / sorcerer / seneschal, mercilessly dropped into the world of mythological power politics, to nearly anyone, even if they, like myself, are not normally a reader of horror or paranormal fiction. At just $3.50, it's almost a must, especially with Halloween right around the corner.

Meeks I had not read any of the Elder Races books/novellas in some time that I liked as well as I enjoyed this one. There was mystery, sex, politics, sex, a bit of history, some small bit of tragedy and did I mention sex?.Honestly, while I have rounded this off to a 5 Star novella it did seem to have a bit more sex than is useful for a short work like this but there was a bit of a reason for some of it and at worst I subtract half a star and it still comes back to 5 Star reading.The worst thing about trying to write a review for a short story or novella is that you cannot say too much or you spoil the story very easily and this is true here but while this story is pretty much complete it is actually the first part of a trilogy of novellas (Dragos Goes to Washington, Pia Does Hollywood, and Liam Takes Manhattan) that will be released by years end.So just to pique your interest a bit, murder, illness, politics, enemies all around, a bit of Sherlock Holmes and you really can't go wrong with this novella. I highly recommend you get your hands on it quick before some club footed reviewer spoils a great story (and some idiot will!).

Her happiness warmed and sustained him. Her feminine scent fed a ferocity of hunger that never faded or mellowed, no matter how he tried to sate himself on her.”FINAL DECISION: A novella primarily about Dragos and Pia from the Elder Races series, this story gives readers an update on the Wyr couple, tosses in some significant events in their lives and sets the stage for more political intrigue in the Elder Races world. For fans of the series, this is great reading, funny and sexy.THE STORY: Dragos and Pia and their amazing son Liam are continuing their lives. After the recent problems with the Elder Races that have been obvious to humans, tensions have arisen. Thus, there is a planned summit between leaders of the elder races and human government leaders in Washington, D.C. Dragos and Pia are to attend. Dragos, who is not good at being diplomatic, intends to rely on Pia to help him not eat people who make him angry. The relationship between Dragos and Pia is also touchy as the mating instinct between them is high.OPINION: Although the description of this book discusses primarily the plot of this novella as being about the political summit in D.C., I was pleasantly surprised that this book is really an update on and an extension of the relationship between Dragos and Pia (with a little Liam thrown in). As a big fan of the Elder Races series and especially Dragos and Pia, I love seeing these two continue to develop their relationship. I don’t want to spoil the plot but there is a significant event that occurs in this novella that clearly will have implications in the future. Harrison has done a good job here of allowing Dragos and Pia to grow without fundamentally changing their characters. Dragos is still the ancient dragon and I love how he views the petty human political world. Because the focus here is on Dragos and Pia’s relationship, this novella is kinda sexy as well. Can’t wait to read the next novella in this trilogy.WORTH MENTIONING: Niniane and Tiago make significant appearances here. Love them.CONNECTED BOOKS: DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON is a novella of the Elder Races series. It can be read as a standalone but really should be read after DRAGON BOUND AND LORD’S FALL which are about Dragos and Pia. DRAGOS GOES TO WASHINGTON is the first of a three part novella mini-series.STAR RATING: I give this novella 4.25 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this novella via Netgalley in order to provide a review. Not a strong standalone; wait for the 3 stories together By Amazon Customer yes, Dragos is a favorite, but this book was too expensive for the length (described in Amazon as a short novel and by the author as a short story!) and too declarative and repetitive in tone. Good smex; A lot of it. A bunch of cameos. Basically a book for fans rather than something to draw one in and keep attention.

A Much Needed and Excellent Resource from an AP Maestro By MCS1968 First of all - if the teachers who have made critical remarks can make something better, DO IT! I find it a little disingenuous of teachers who find fault with a product and then want an answer key! The whole point of historical thinking skills is that there is NO correct answer, although some answers may be better than others. Anyone who cannot lead students through this process and accept that different students can come up with different results (and also needs an answer key) should not be teaching Advanced Placement. Secondly, the reason there are numerous pages the same is that this is a WORKBOOK - it is intended that the student write in the book. And lastly, just the final two sections alone are worth the reasonable price of this book. Last year it took me hours to locate two different texts to compare for historical interpretation - this book has 42 pages of them! The exercises on chronological reasoning are also excellent and very helpful. As someone who scores the essays, I can attest that chronological reasoning is one of the weakest areas of many students' writing. The sample pages that introduce each historical thinking skill are excellent. John Irish has done a masterful job of determining themes that can be used under each type of historical thinking skill. He is also an individual who has worked on AP test development and knows exactly what College Board is looking for in emphasizing these skills. I applaud his efforts and am extremely grateful for the time he has saved me with this workbook for students. I'm just hoping he can get the AP Euro historical thinking skills workbook out as soon as possible!!!

Bowe I just recieved this in the mail last week and I've already started using it in my planning for the upcoming school year. Finally! A great resource for AP U.S. History teachers and students to begin doing the work of "applied history," which is so important, especially in light of the newly redesign AP U.S. History exam! High school students need to learn how to do and apply the skills of historical and critical thinking. This book provides the perfect platform for that work. I will also be using this with my Honors U.S. History and regular-level U.S. History classes. Thank you John Irish for another wonderful resource for high school history teachers!

5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Not bad! But then that exact same worksheet is repeated ... By Mark Foley Not what I was expecting. There are basically nine different worksheets in here. But each of the nine has the titled changed repeatedly to make it through the APUSH survey. So, for example, there's a worksheet called "Argumentation: Bacon's Rebellion was a turning point ..." with a support/refut T chart underneath it and a small section under that for a thesis. Not bad! But then that exact same worksheet is repeated for 20-30 more pages with only the question at the top changed. So twenty more support/refute T Charts with the these space at the bottom and only the question at the top changed. This is how all nine sections are done - same worksheet, different title.I agree with the earlier commenter - if an answer guide had been provided then this would be a valuable tool. As it is this seems like nine ideas spread out to make a workbook. It's disappointing. I suggest any of the Mike Henry books as an alternative, especially the new Threads of History.

Excellent, thorough historical analysis; ignore bogus 1-star reviews By Adam Take a moment to read the one-star reviews and get a sense of whether you believe these people actually read the book. I have. It's excellent, as are his two prior books.This book is a historian's perspective on the origins and evolution of the "Christian nation/founding" narrative. It examines the historical record in depth and is the opposite of ideologues' (such as Barton) quote-mining approach. Unsurprisingly, politicians and leaders evoke divine purpose in times of conflict as a way to forge a collective identity.Green's particular legal background is evident in his knowledge of the development of the Constitution, especially the First Amendment, but he deals in more depth with the Separation of Church and State in his prior books (both of which I've read too). They're also excellent for people interested in history, law and the First Amendment.

Green provides a very well-researched, detailed and nuanced history of religious thought during the time of the colonists, at the founding of the new country and how the past was manipulated to create the myth we now know as a "Christian America." It is balanced and debunks many talking points on both sides of the current arguments about the founding of the country.I believe this is one book that could be done an injustice by trying to summarize it briefly. It is extremely nuanced and any brief overview will skip parts of the story that together make the overall argument. Let me just say that unless you're more interested in having your way than exploring the truth, this will be a rewarding read.I highly recommend this book for anyone either involved in, or interested in, the contemporary debates over whether or to what degree America might be a "Christian country."Reviewed from an ARC made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

Berg Dorie Clark's basic point is that networking is not about collecting business cards; it's about making friends. Everyone in your network need not be a longtime close personal friend, but you should like them and they should like you, and you should think about how you can help them as well as how they might help you. Of course, those are often the same thing; for example if you buy a service you need, both parties are helped.It may seem strange that she then goes on to talk about automating communication, pruning your contact list, and other impersonal-sounding techniques; but really, you do that with your old-fashioned friends, too (e.g., your Christmas card list!) What makes Dorie's books so useful is that she thinks systematically about people who are good at something -- in this case, networking -- do naturally. Well worth the low price!

She quickly busts the myth that networking is about exchanging business cards at loud, cattle-call events. Instead, it's about getting to know really cool people on your own terms, and building those relationships over time. If you score professional benefits, great. But it's also just about having people in your life who energize you and inspire you. From using podcasting (or column writing) as a way to network to hosting small events, Dorie's got lots of unconventional ideas on how to find contacts and renew old ones. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to deepen their connections and get more out of professional events.

I felt inspired to pick up this book and found it a helpful read. Here are some of the specific lessons that I found valuable from the book1) A guiding definition for networking to keep in mind: "[networking is] how to be a good person in the business world. You need to look out for others." Well said.2) Look For The Value You Can Provide. Clark directly addresses a concern that I and others have felt when seeking to build a relationship with a VIP or CEO - "how can I add value to them when they are already so successful?" Simply put, most successful people tend to focus on their area of specialization and usually have knowledge gaps elsewhere. Clark gives the example of someone who recently moved to your city (you can give them the "local view") or an executive who is looking to improve their health.3) How To Think About Events. Major events and conferences often attract the attention in networking books and articles. They do present significant opportunities. Several entrepreneurs and authors (e.g. Tim Ferriss and John Lee Dumas) attribute much of their early success to conferences. Clark presents great suggestions and sympathy for introverts attending these events and how to make the most out of them.4) Why To Host Events. Putting an event together puts is a secret of networking that more and more people are discovering. Clark gives the example of hosting small dinners based on a common theme. For example, she has hosted small events for business book authors. It is more work to organize an event. The rewards for being the organizer are also worth it!5) Why Interviews Are Powerful. Until recently, the ability to conduct interviews with the world's leaders in business and other fields was reserved for the media. Clark shows us that many more people are getting into the interview game. Did you know that several people (e.g. Andrew Warner, founder of Mixergy.com and John Lee Dumas, Entrepreneur on Fire) built successful companies based on podcast interviews? Interviews are a great way to build your network. Clark points out an interviewing an expert for your blog or podcast does double duty as marketing and professional development.6) The 2 "Golden Questions" To Ask In Meeting New People. From time to time, we all run into new people. I found the following suggested questions for those situations interesting: "What other ideas do you have for me? And who else should I talk with? Those questions help you break out of your own circle in networking and often obtain introductions to new, interesting people—who you can then introduce to the rest of your network."7) Rethink the public and private division of networking. Clark, like Keith Ferrazi, believes in the value of merging professional and personal life together. It is a thought provoking concept. The book gives example of how sharing personal challenges and observations at a networking dinner (or other small group) can be an effective way to build closer relationships.

A "Pilgrim's Progress" set in the Great Plains By A Customer Trey McLean, an innocent and adventurous young man, takes leave of his farming family in East Texas to seek his fortune among the cattle ranches and drives of still wild West Texas. After being cheated out of all his money, Trey quickly finds trust and honesty to be qualities lacking in too many of the people he meets. Encounters with a fanatical lawman, ruthless cattle barons, and common thieves only strengthen his determination to succeed. But, as in any good Western, there are the good guys, too. With their help, the skills he has he improves, and those he needs he goes after with both muscle and brain. Along the way, his path brings him to the home of the Starks and their daughter Sarah. He falls in love with her, but must leave her behind too soon when he hires on for his first cattle drive up to the railheads in Kansas. His growing love and the hope of returning to find Sarah waiting for him help Trey survive the daily trials of the trail. In Trey McLean, Kelton has created the Everyman of the early west, a common hero whose blunders and triumphs rein us in and would make us proud to ride in the saddle next to him.

Any one who likes the thought of striking it new in a new area or cattle driving will enjoy this book. This book was so wonderful that I read it twice in the same week and still felt the need to read more of it. Anyone who picks it up will love it and should enjoy it for a long long time.

The characters come alive and this author definitely is a studious expert in knowing human nature.Trey and Sarah McLean are wonderful characters, as well as all of the others who are in this story.Elmer Kelton fleshes them all out and there are no real minor characters. That, I believe, is where a lot of his true talent lies.
