The plot devices are quite original and fresh. I read all three books in two days because I wanted to see what happened. Won't spoil it for you....but...you will feel happy you read it all.I love the author's spin. The writing is good. I have one personal gripe that makes my teeth grind. PLEASE learn when to use "me" and "I" because it does matter! This third book appears to be the end of the series. A pity, because I would enjoy reading about these characters again.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved it By debbie ragan Love to read a book that I hate for it to end. This was truly one of those. I hope Lydia and Pheneas will have more adventures in the near future!

From School Library Journal Gr 3–8—This book presents a rare perspective into the creatures of the deep, with engaging images and clear facts. Sharks are the main focus, but there are captivating chapters devoted to many other creatures, including the giant clam, spiny devil fish, sea horse, Gentoo penguin, and sea otter, making this title ideal for research purposes and pleasure reading alike. The animals are divided into five sections: "Amazing Anatomy," "Animal Athletes," "Life Stories," "Supernatural Senses," and "Exploring the Deep." Topics such as size, life span, and diet are featured for each entry, and often charts accompany the facts. Detailed diagrams and large, stunning, colorful photographs complement the captivating text. VERDICT Secure this work as an awe-inspiring resource on sharks and other wildlife of the deep for students and teachers.—Beth McGuire, Hempfield Area School District, Greensburg, PA

This is my 6 year old sons favorite book, he carries it around with him and we read it every night. It is definitely a visual book with high quality full page color photos and cool graphics, less written information that captures interesting facts, diet, location etc. It also includes other creatures of the sea, and would be a great book as a gift or a reference book for a home library.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By Talvi Super Shark Encyclopedia truly lives up to its name - beautifully presented, mountains of facts, and information intelligently ordered to make this a book children can grow with - from basic information suitable for grade school interspersed with more detailed information useful for older kids/middle school. It's the type of book that is so incredibly well done that it should be in every library and school. Certainly, it's a fantastic home resource as well.Although the focus is on sharks, other deep sea creatures are also presented. The book breaks down as follows:Amazing anatomy (discover what makes ocean animals ideally suited for their environment - fins, tusks, teeth tentacles, colorful camouflage, spines, etc.).Animal athletes (jumpers, flyers, surfers - from boxing with crabs to thrashing around with a thresher shark).Life stories (survival techniques from krill/safety in numbers to parrotfish covering themselves in slime.Supernatural senses (some animals have extraordinary abilities - from sensing electrical signals to detecting light that other creatures can't see).Exploring the deep (all the incredibly strange and fascinating creatures at the greater ocean depths). While parents and kids may at first be interested in the shark aspect, there really is so much more here. Illustrations, photographs, call out boxes (e.g., 'California horn shark at a glance, including size, habitat, location, diet) help tell the story. There are fun facts, interesting comments, and a slew of very interesting tidbits. But it is rarely presented in block paragraph form - instead everything is presented brightly and in creative and engaging ways that encourage young readers to devour the topic. Never does the book talk down to kids or strike a false or syrupy note.Because it is so incredibly informative and beautifully presented, this is an easy 5 star, highest recommendation. I've rarely seen a better 'encyclopedia' type of presentation on the subject of sealife. As well, I've gone over it with my 11 year old many times and she loves to explore the various sea creatures and their facts - it's definitely a hit with her. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

These books are tiny, cute and pink! My daughter is *just* starting to learn how to read and these books are too advanced. They do show some simple words (sight words and such) but words like "unicorn" and "school" are certainly not meant for a brand new reader.Again cute as a button and my daughter loves having them read to her. There just isn't a very large assortment of words that are meant for a just starting reader. The only negative note that I have to this is the way I received this item. The little box was crushed and smashed into a tiny shipping box. Needless to say, this item (being a paper box) was also crushed and smashed. The books were in good condition, but the box was utterly destroyed. I would have returned them but for the fact that my daughter had already seen the books and didn't wish to be deprived of them. Shame on the shipper, it was OBVIOUS that the packaging was too small.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. It's a super cute (and tiny) box set By Christina I have a 5 year old who loves when I read her Pinkalicious's adventures. I bought these to encourage her to start reading on her own. It's a super cute (and tiny) box set. There are 12 books; however, the packaging is a little misleading. Along with the books, inside the box is a spacer that is used to fill the empty space so it looks like you're getting more than you really are. I don't know what the point of that was.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Short and long vowel practice By Sarah Vargas This is a nice set of practice readers for kindergarten to first grade, a child who is learning to read and needs work on sight words and reading fluency. The books are very short and simple, far too easy for a second grader or even a first grader who reads at the proper level. The product description said the books align with the Common Core so I expected the package to contain some information about how they support the standards, but there was nothing. If you are looking for a cute set of books for a young girl to practice with, these are an adorable and entertaining set. There isn't any instruction other than the vowel sounds though, so if you are looking for any phonics instruction and application, these books would have to be paired with another book of instruction and used for supplemental practice. There is one book for each short vowel and one book for each long vowel.Overall, this is a nice, but brief set of books.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Science-fiction at its very best!!! By kindov I was already quite impressed with Glukhovsky's previous books (I read both his Metro books), but this one is even better. It has credible characters full of inner conflicts that mimic the problems of the dystopian Europe, where immortality is everybody's right but conceiving a child is a crime (due to the huge overpopulation and the need to control it drastically). The story is full of twists and it will literally absorb you emotionally (some scenes in the book are rather tough to read through and digest). This is sci-fi at its best, that will not just entertain, but really make you think about "serious matters" such as the state of our society and our attitude to aging and death.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite books I've ever read. By Garrett I've read both Dmitry's books that have been translated into English, Metro 2033 & 2034. I thought both were outstanding books and even read them over again. So when I learned that another Glukhovsky book was translated into English, I was ecstatic. This is easily one of my favorite books, there was not a single dull moment in the entire book. Everything about it was phenomenal, from the fantastic characters to the realized world to the conflicts and gray morality. Truly a book that will stand the test of time.

By Lucius Pope Kindle Version Problem:The letter combination "ft" is consistently dropped from words like lift. Compare the preview for the print version of the book and the kindle version. In the Kindle version the narrator refers to a "li". In the print version it is lift.Verdict: Unreadable until corrected. Also, Amazon would not let me write a review until I clicked on how I would describe the plot of the book. Twenty pages in, I have no idea.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fun illustrated chapter book for early independent readers. By Dr Lissy This is the second critter club purchase I have made; the first was a four-in-one special at Costco. An impulse buy, I had never previously heard of this series. This book is written for children aged 5 - 9 years old. It's a simple chapter book for early independent readers. The print is large and there are numerous interesting illustrations. At the time of writing, I have a daughter in kindergarten who is reading at 3rd grade level. We have had issues sourcing books that combine suitable subject matter and content with the style and layout of the book.Thankfully, the critter club series overcomes these issues. My six year old daughter states that she likes the stories, the way the book is easy to read, and that there are friends who do fun things together. She read this after school on the day she received it, and finished it the next morning before school. Finally, the quality of the cover seems a little thinner than I expected and the paper quality is an acceptable matt. I suspect that over the 30 years since I regularly bought books, the standard of the paper material has diminished. On this occasion I am not marking the item down for this situation.Recommended! We will be buying more books in this series.(I paid full purchase price for this book.)

She picked the first one out because the cover had sparkly letters on it. She was hooked right from the start and have read all 11 books that are currently available. They teach kids about friendship and helping out animals. The stories are very appropriate for younger children who can't read yet as well. I work in a pre-school and kindergarten and have read them out loud in class. Most kids from 7ish - 9 or 10 would enjoy reading them on their own.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book series for young readers By Sara Michelle Cole My daughter absolutely loves this book series. She's 8 and has read all of the books in the series. She can't wait for more to be released. Book was fair-priced, and shipped quickly. Very happy with our purchase.

By any measure, the law as a profession is in serious trouble. Americans' trust in lawyers is at a low, and many members of the profession wish they had chosen a different path. Law schools, with their endlessly rising tuitions, are churning out too many graduates for the jobs available. Yet despite the glut of lawyers, the United States ranks 67th (tied with Uganda) of 97 countries in access to justice and affordability of legal services. The upper echelons of the legal establishment remain heavily white and male. Most problematic of all, the professional organizations that could help remedy these concerns instead jealously protect their prerogatives, stifling necessary innovation and failing to hold practitioners accountable.Deborah Rhode's The Trouble with Lawyers is a comprehensive account of the challenges facing the American bar. She examines how the problems have affected (and originated within) law schools, firms, and governance institutions like bar associations; the impact on the justice system and access to lawyers for the poor; and the profession's underlying difficulties with diversity. She uncovers the structural problems, from the tyranny of law school rankings and billable hours to the lack of accountability and innovation built into legal governance-all of which do a disservice to lawyers, their clients, and the public. The Trouble with Lawyers is a clear call to fix a profession that has gone badly off the rails, and a source of innovative responses.

The Trouble with Lawyers, by Deborah L. Rhode

Review "The Trouble with Lawyers is well indexed and written in a lively, engaging style. Rhode intersperses anecdotes with statements of facts in a way that makes for an inviting text. Who should read this book? Everyone contemplating becoming a lawyer, college prelaw placement advisers, law school librarians and placement officers, and anyone interested in legal ethics and the practicalities of the legal profession should read The Trouble with Lawyers." -Elizabeth A. Greenfield, Law Library Journal

"This important book should be widely read and could lay the foundation for a significant reform agenda. Highly recommended." -J. A. Pierceson, University of Illinois at Springfield, Choice

"Rhode's interesting book The Trouble with Lawyers represents a comprehensive account of the challenges which face the American Bar and will be of great interest to English Counsel. This is an important book at an important time for the legal profession both here and abroad so do read it carefully as it could affect your own future. Thank you Deborah for a great contribution to the continuing debate." Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor, Richmond Green Chambers

"[An] honest, well researched account of the spectre of decreasing public access to justice that is resulting, inter alia, from an unsustainably increasing number of law schools, law students, and lawyers in the United States." -Magdalene D'Silva, The Modern Law Review

A Must-Read for Anyone Considering Law School By Shann Reviews I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.I believe that anyone thinking about applying to Law School seriously needs to read The Trouble with Lawyers before they truly make their decision. Deborah Rhode paints a very dim picture of the legal field, so much so that if every Pre-Law student read this book, there may be no one showing up to take the June LSATs. However, as students, we are given rose colored glasses by our professors and told that everything is fine and we are guaranteed success, even in this economy, when that is just not the truth. The Trouble with Lawyers is the balance that is sorely needed to call out the Elephant in the Room and acknowledge that 2015 is not the same world as 2005. It is filled with statistics and data backed up with proof that talks about the problems faces by lawyers, especially those who are newly entering the field. For years, I was told that being a lawyer is a guarantee to becoming wealthy, and that is no longer the case. As a Jurisprudence student myself, and as a woman, I am really glad to have read this book before I dove into getting myself in even more debt.If it is your life dream to be a lawyer, do not be afraid that this book will change your mind. If you truly want to be a lawyer, do it. Just don't show up to a gun battle with a plastic sword. Reading The Trouble with Lawyers will only prepare you for the worst, should it ever happen. This book is NOT for a casual reader. You will end up staring blankly at the pages, asking yourself why you care. For anyone who is already a lawyer, a lot of what is in this book this may not be news to you, because you're living it. However, it may broaden your perspective to the issues that exist in the field, and could possibly motivate you to try and make a change.

Abrams The Trouble With Lawyers is an thorough and probative analysis of a profession that has become a hyper-competitive business, far different from what it was, and far less satisfying and meaningful to those who practice law. Anyone considering applying to law school should first read this book to get an accurate picture of the state of the profession and what realistic career paths may be available, and those who have practiced should read this book for a thoughtful and accurate consideration of the legal business, and what might be done to reclaim the dignity and honor of the profession. Rhode's research is comprehensive, her analysis is penetrating and considers varying perspectives of the issue, her writing is compelling, and her ideas are original and provoke thought and action. From my perspective as a partner in a big law firm for 35 years, this book is outstanding, and I highly recommend it.

HIGHLY OPINIONATED, OF COURSE AND DELICIOUSLY AMERICAN By Phillip Taylor MBE HIGHLY OPINIONATED, OF COURSE AND DELICIOUSLY AMERICANWITH SOMETHING WE BRITS WOULD CERTAINLY TAKE ISSUE WITH: OR WOULD WE!An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersLawyers can be a troublesome bunch of professionals although that is the nature of our work! So when we read “The Trouble with Lawyers” by Deborah Rhode we realized that Oxford University Press has published another most useful statement on the direction lawyers might take for the future because what happens in America can often affect us here and vice versa.Certainly the legal profession in England and Wales is going through a further transition of its own as digitalization takes over many tasks with the arrival of artificial intelligence so a number of important legal practice management books have started appearing questioning our future, long term survival so we must take it more seriously and as a priority! And that is where Deborah Rhode comes in. By any measure, the law as a profession could be considered to be in serious trouble at present to some, and to others it could be going through another transitional period although the American position is reviewed with great clarity in this most interesting, and potentially alarming book, delightfully entitled “The Trouble with Lawyers” which is an intriguing title to set the mind thinking. It is unfortunately the case that an American’s trust in his or her lawyer is at a serious low point, and many members of the profession are suggesting that they wish they had chosen a different path. The same, of course, could be said for both doctors and lawyers here in the UK although the skills of a doctor are much more readily transferable than those of the lawyer on the international stage. To compound the problem, law schools, with their continually rising fees both here and elsewhere, are churning out too many graduates for the jobs available but that is the same in other fields critics would point out. Yet despite the over-subscribed number of lawyers, the USA ranks 67th (tied with Uganda) out of 97 countries with what is termed “access to justice and affordability of legal services” and we dare not speculate on the UK’s position. The higher echelons of the legal establishment remain heavily white and male in many countries even though some substantial efforts have been introduced in order to encourage diversity, especially here with the Bar Council. And, as Rhode postulates, “most problematic of all, the professional bodies that could help alleviate these concerns instead (allegedly) jealously protect their prerogatives, stifling necessary innovation and failing to hold practitioners accountable”.Rhode's interesting book “The Trouble with Lawyers” represents a comprehensive account of the challenges which face the American Bar and will be of great interest to English Counsel. She examines how the problems have affected (and originated within) law schools, firms, and governance institutions like the Bar associations; the impact on the justice system and access to lawyers for the poor; and the profession's underlying difficulties with diversity which, frankly, we all have to face in the western world.Rhodes describes and uncovers the structural problems, from “the tyranny of law school rankings and billable hours to the lack of accountability and innovation built into legal governance-all of which do a disservice to lawyers, their clients, and the public”... nicely put! Yes, it’s correct to say that “The Trouble with Lawyers” represents a clear call to fix a profession that has gone badly off the rails, and a source of innovative responses. This is an important book at an important time for the legal profession both here and abroad so do read it carefully as it could affect your own future! Thank you Deborah for a great contribution to the continuing debate!

This is a great resource that I have been using in small guided reading groups to teach close reading and text coding or marking. Each passage focuses on specific skills for the text marking such as Main Idea, Compare/Contrast, and Cause and Effect. The questions that go along with the text reinforces vocabulary, using context clues, and other additional "evidence based" skills. The passages are challenging but grade appropriate. I have shared it with others who are enjoy using it too. I highly recommend this book.

Challenging Reading By Dragonlocke The passages were interesting and the questions gave students the challenge to infer and to think, but the front page keys have some missing signal words. Some of the background information required for understanding is st too high of a levelfor grade level understanding.
