A stylish psychological thriller with the compelling intrigue of The Silent Wife and Turn of Mind and the white-knuckle pacing of Before I Go to Sleep—in which a woman suffering from bipolar disorder cannot remember if she murdered her friend.

Dana Catrell is shocked when her neighbor Celia is brutally murdered. To Dana’s horror, she was the last person to see Celia alive. Suffering from mania, the result of her bipolar disorder, she has troubling holes in her memory, including what happened on the afternoon of Celia’s death.

Her husband’s odd behavior and the probing of Detective Jack Moss create further complications as she searches for answers. The closer she comes to piecing together the shards of her broken memory, the more Dana falls apart. Is there a murderer lurking inside her . . . or is there one out there in the shadows of reality, waiting to strike again?

A story of marriage, murder, and madness, The Pocket Wife explores the world through the foggy lens of a woman on the edge.

The Pocket Wife: A Novel, by Susan Crawford

Review “Not a word is wasted in Susan Crawford’s fast-paced, thrilling debut. As Crawford explores the boundaries of memory and sanity, the suspense steadily gathers, and in her skilled hands, readers will be left guessing until the very end.” (Lori Roy, Edgar Award winning author of BENT ROAD and LET ME DIE IN HIS FOOTSTEPS)“The Pocket Wife is an exceptional literary thriller debut that sensitively portrays a woman struggling with Bipolar Disorder, and the horrific possibility that she’s a murderer. Engrossing, thrilling, and page turning all the way through, this is one you won’t want to miss!” (Chevy Stevens, New York Times bestselling author)“The Pocket Wife is haunting, gripping, and lyrical--a book you won’t want to put down. Susan Crawford is a bright new star.” (Deborah Crombie, New York Times bestselling author)“Because the tale is told primarily from Dana’s sharp but manic perspective, suspense develops around her possibly unreliable interpretation of events. This is a gripping, character-driven mystery that would pair well with Sophie Hannah’s The Truth-Teller’s Lie.” (Booklist)“This intriguing thriller will leave readers guessing till the last minute. Dana Cantrell is a dynamic, well-written character whose bipolar disorder makes her both maddening and endearing. Tightly moving, fast-paced and suspenseful, Crawford’s debut novel puts her on the map of writers to watch.” (RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 STARS))“Descriptive, lyrical prose creates an intimate and visceral read that is both a solid mystery and a fast-paced psychological thriller. Try this first novel as a read-alike for Alice LaPlante’s Turn of Mind.” (Library Journal)“Great premise, and characters, and a wonderfully evocative setting, heavy with heat and suburban boredom, and the uneasy threat of not quite knowing what is going on. Really great.” (Sabine Durrant, author of Under Your Skin)

From the Back Cover

It isn’t the big things Peter does that make Dana want to leave him; it’s more the smaller things, like sticking her inside his pocket in the middle of a thought—these demeaning, shrinking things he does that make her feel as trivial as a sneeze.” Dana Catrell leads a quiet life in a suburb a stone’s throw from Manhattan. She spends her days tidying, reading, missing her son who’s away at college, and wondering what went wrong in her marriage to her husband, Peter, who comes home late most nights and makes her feel as unimportant as a pocketful of loose change.

Then on one horrific day, Celia—Dana’s friend and neighbor—is found murdered . . . and Dana’s life suddenly begins to spiral out of control as she feels herself sliding toward the brink of insanity. Dana suffers from bipolar disorder, and she can’t account for the troubling gaps in her memory on the afternoon of Celia’s death. Even more terrifying, Dana was the last person to see her friend alive on that deadly day when Celia revealed a disturbing secret.

Is murder on Dana’s mind—or is it all in her head? And is there a killer lurking inside her . . . or is there one out there in the shadows of reality, waiting to strike again? “Exceptional.”—Chevy Stevens, New York Times bestselling author

Great debut novel about marriage, murder, and madness By Neal Reynolds This is Susan Crawford's first novel and hopefully not her last because this one's a suspenseful beauty. She has had short fiction and poetry published and the craftsmanship shows. Dana Carrell is a victim of bipolar disorder. We see much of the story through her eyes, and therefore we need to separate what is truly happening from what she believes to be happening. This isn't as confusing as it may sound thanks to the author's deft narration The book's title is pretty well explained in the first chapter. Her husband Peter treats her as a "pocket wife" who he can put in his pocket, like his cellular phone, to have out of his way. We also learn in the first chapter that her best friend who's also her neighbor has been murdered and Dana is the last person to have seen her. Due to Dana's inebriation and her mental disorder, she remembers very little of that last encounter and therefore is one of detective Jack Ross's prime suspects. Many chapters are told from Jack's viewpoint as he investigates the murder. He also has personal issues affecting him, especially a son who's going bad and may be involved in the murder.Susan Crawford keeps us glued to the pages as the story progresses. She handles the mystery element very well and the final revelation might well be a surprise although the clues are there if the reader catches them. All in all, this is a haunting story of a troubled marriage, brutal murder manic madness. Susan Crawford is an author you need to discover, for sure.

By Miss Barbara Can the mind of a manic/depressive be trusted to separate fact from fiction? This is the conundrum Dana Catrell faces in the polished mystery novel The Pocket Wife by Susan Crawford. Dana's neighbor Celia is found dead on her floor amid a pool of blood on the very day that the two women had gotten drunk together. The encounter had not ended well after Celia had shown Dana a photo of Peter, Dana's husband, in a compromising situation.Dana and her husband have been drifting apart; more so since their son has left the nest for college. She feels she is being taken for granted and ignored; she's now something her husband tucks away in his pocket to deal with later - a pocket wife. Dana has had bouts of mental problems since her college days when she was actually institutionalized after she was found on a roof top tossing papers on to the street.Detective Jack Moss intuits there is more going on with this case than meets the eye. He has family problems of his own and goes so far as to contact his disengaged son for information that may connect threads in this mystery.Dana is slowly falling apart with the frustration of not remembering what happened that day. She doesn't trust her husband, doesn't trust herself and doesn't trust that the truth will be unearthed in a manner that she can live with. This is a good mystery that will keep the readers engaged until the very end.

The number-one suspect may be crazy, but she's likable By Patto Even the detective who may be arresting Dana for murdering her friend Celia finds her likable – a lost soul with a sense of humor. Detective Jack Moss has a weakness for lost souls. The case is complex, for Celia might just as easily have been murdered by her husband or her lover as by Dana. But the assistant prosecutor is eager to make this case a feather in her cap. She wants a quick arrest. Dana is a natural for the crime. She has mental health issues. She starts having a breakdown as the investigation moves forward. And the evidence suggests that she was the last person to see Celia alive. Dana's not even sure herself if she did it or not. This is a wonderfully complex mystery. Everyone is connected in some way to the murder, even the detective's troubled son. Everyone is stressed out and covering up something. But the portrait of Dana unraveling is the most masterful character study of all, in a story driven by the characters and their flaws.Jack Moss is an attractive detective, consumed by his job, but with just enough drama in his personal life to keep him interesting.I enjoyed this novel very much. Despite all the suffering various characters undergo, the mood is essentially upbeat. And the denouement is both surprising and deeply satisfying.
