In fact, I suspect that the Spanish volume was the prototype on which the others were based. Even so, there are still some sloppy errors that need to be cleaned up. For example, one of the expressions highlighted in a story is "es de mucha de utilidad." But as the glossary itself shows, the correct expression is "es de mucha utilidad."In a later story the author writes "El robusto pirata y Carlos anduvieron varios pasos lejos de los demás. Frank y Susana disimulaban." There are several problems here. The verb that collocates with "paso" (step) in Spanish is "dar." In other words, dar un paso means to take a step. This is important because a learner is tempted to translate literally and say "tomar un paso" since we _take_steps in English. The second problem is the translation of "disimulaban" as "disguised" -- which makes no sense and is not what it means here. It means "pretended not to notice" or "acted as if nothing were wrong." Disimular is certainly a verb that needs glossing, but it should be glossed correctly!Inappropriate glossing is one of the main problems with this book. Instead of teaching the reader to recognize cognates, the book tends to gloss words whose meaning is obvious and often fails to gloss terms that are anything but clear. For example, I initially misunderstood the following sentence: Silvia era una mujer muy inteligente y pensaba siempre que había problemas, nunca solía ponerse demasiado nerviosa." I took this to mean "Silvia was a very intelligent woman and always thought that there were problems; she never got too nervous." Since that makes no sense, I read the sentence again and decided that the author means "she thought whenever there were problems" since "siempre que" can mean "whenever." I doubt that the sentence is perfectly correct in Spanish (and note that the ambiguity goes away if you change the verb from pensar to reflexionar), but even if it is, the phrase "siempre que" should have been glossed, but wasn't.Instead, the author glosses words like curiosidad and tranquilidad, when he should have pointed out that the ending DAD in Spanish corresponds to TY in English. Knowing this will allow the learner to recognize hundreds of Spanish words without needing a gloss. Similarly, instead of glossing normalmente and directamente, the author should have explained that MENTE in Spanish is the equivalent of LY in English, with the same beneficial results for the learner. And there is no need for a gloss, much less an explanation, of words like impaciente or ciencia ficción. Yet these are glossed, but a phrase like "menuda semana de locos" is not.The author would also be well advised to have his writing edited, because sentences like la cobertura del móvil no funcionaba en ese sitio aren't quite right. It's not that the coverage doesn't work; the sentence should say either that there was no coverage or that the mobile phone didn't work. And the sentence Mi cuerpo es algo ancho porque hago mucho ejercicio (my body is somewhat wide because I do a lot of exercise) doesn't make much sense. I had a look at the Italian version, which says that his body was toned. That makes a lot more sense. The Spanish version ought to be corrected.

Somewhat helpful By frequent Amazon shopper My 14 year old daughter reports that they are not exciting stories- boring actually - but somewhat useful in reading Spanish. For example, the first chapter is about a brother and sister traveling from London to Barcelona and the twist is that they have jet lag and fall asleep and miss their bus stop when they arrive in Barcelona.

I took Spanish for two years in high school, and remember a bit, but I have always wanted to be a little better at it. This book of Spanish short stories offers a different approach than most "language teaching" books I have seen. It is designed to fully immerse the reader in the language and the story, offering English translations for the more difficult words at the end of each section. It even contains instructions on how to go about reading it to get the most benefit. I have read through the whole thing a couple of times now, and while I still don't get quite all of it, I am understanding and remembering more each time. I'm not sure that this is the best approach for someone who has never been exposed to the language, but as I have some experience with it, it works fine for me. I am very glad that I found this book, as it really is helping me to improve my understanding of Spanish.I received this book on Kindle at a promotional price in exchange for my honest review. I am not obligated in any way to provide positive commentary about the book, only my unbiased opinion.
