Team of Teams by General Stanley McChrystal | Key Takeaways & Analysis

Preview:

Team of Teams by General Stanley McChrystal is an examination of the process he began of restructuring the Joint Special Operations Command management style, from a rigid command structure to a cooperative team comprised of smaller specialized teams. While fighting Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), General McChrystal noted how the United States and coalition militaries were efficient war-fighting machines, but they were not adaptable or effective against the seemingly disordered AQI. In 2005, after a particularly destructive terrorist attack at the opening of a sewage plant near Baghdad, McChrystal began considering whether the efficient structure was actually hindering the counterinsurgency, preventing them from responding to threats in real time and delaying the capture of AQI leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Modern military management originated at the 1900 World's Fair, when Frederick Winslow Taylor revealed his work in steel production efficiency. Taylor believed that there is a right way to do any given thing…

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for leaders and managers! By Amazon Customer This review of “Team of Teams” breaks down the non-fiction book into nine key-takeaways about team leadership, management, and cooperation. The author, General McChrystal, changed the organization of the military Special Forces in order to better combat Al-Qaeda in Iraq. The ninth takeaway was my favorite. General McChrystal explains that as a leader in a team of teams, you must act more like a gardener than a traditional commander. By resisting the urge to monitor and instruct, and instead let others make decisions, you get a more efficient organization. Letting others make decisions can be difficult, but delegating to those under your command will build trust and allow the organization to streamline its operations. If you are a leader or manager, this is a great review to read. You may not have time to dissect the actual book by General McChrystal, but this concise analysis is amazing. The takeaways are honest and have experience to prove their veracity.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ~~ A quick read that summarizes the original book ~~ By Richard and Liz The original book Team of Teams by General Stanley McChrystal, a 4 star general in the U.S. Army, "is an examination of the process he began of restructuring the Joint Special Operations Command management style, from a rigid command structure to a cooperative team comprised of smaller specialized teams".A three page (Kindle) overview is followed by the 'Important People' section where we read short paragraphs on nine people, one of whom you may be surprised to learn is Admiral Horatio Nelson! There are also nine 'Key Takeaways' in this summary which are listed first then discussed in more detail. How many of you know that "an efficient system is not necessarily effective" and "creating an effective system can sometimes reduce its efficiency"? There is a lot of good, common sense information in this section. Many examples are supplied that are not connected to the military but rather to things that are relevant to the everyday person thus making it an easier book to follow and understand.Instaread states that "Team of Teams is written in the style of a lecture" and includes diagrams. An easy dialog to follow. Please note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread summary and NOT the original book. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A detailed and professionally written summary and analysis that is a perfect companion to the book By E.A. Gray As an ex-Marine I thoroughly enjoyed the book Team of Teams. Due to the exceptional actions and strategies of General McChrystal I was enthralled by the material and have delved as deep as possible into the machinations of this brilliant man. I purchased this Summary and Analysis because I wanted it to further illuminate me on the details of the work. The Key Takeaways was my favorite part of this well structured companion because it succinctly described team approaches and systems in a manner that brings further clarity to the actions in the novel; they also are quick reference materials for when I want to discuss what I got out of the book with others. To me, that alone was worth the price of the book. Outside of the Key Takeaways, the overview and discussion of important people distilled down the rest of the book into easy to grasp descriptions as well; a task not so simple given the complexities of the book.
