Deacon Shader is a child out of time, removed as a baby from his Ancient world parents and raised on the Isle of Maranore. On his seventh birthday, the philosopher Aristodeus arrives to commence the boy’s training with sword and mind. Nothing short of excellence will suffice, if Deacon is to fulfill his destiny and avert the Unweaving of all things. But as Aristodeus pushes him to the limits, reavers are spotted approaching the coast, and a cloud of horror descends upon the village. For these are no ordinary pirates. They sail under the Impaled Man, the grisly flag of Verusia, land of the undead and realm of the Lich Lord. Ward of the Philosopher is a Shader Origins novella of 15,500 words introducing the character of Deacon Shader as a child. The Shader Origins novellas (Ward of the Philosopher and The Seventh Horse) serve as an introduction to the bestselling Shader series: 1. Sword of the Archon 2. Best Laid Plans 3. The Unweaving In this brief introduction to the world of Urddynoor, D.P. Prior slots squarely into the sword and sorcery and heroic fantasy traditions pioneered by Michael Moorcock, R.E. Howard, Lin Carter, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. With a strong sense of good against evil set against a post-apocalyptic background of deception and the remnants of long buried ancient civilizations, one cannot help but place this series in the company of Stephen King's The Dark Tower and Steven Erikson's Malazan books. Ultimately, though, the discerning reader will not miss the huge debt the author has to David Gemmell. For anyone considering taking the plunge into the bestselling Shader books and braving their enormous scope, Ward of the Philosopher presents the perfect entry point to the series.

(Amazon Customer)What reviewers are saying about the Shader series:"... a master storyteller." -- Melinda LeBaron"I am in awe of Mr. Priors knack for creating characters that are more than two dimensional and have a purpose for what they do." -- Sentient Sword"The fight scenes are fantastic." -- Indie Book Blog"To me, the star of this show is the intriguing post-apocalyptic world that Mr. Prior began building in Sword of the Archon. This alternative Earth is a wondrous thing to behold, filled with interesting lore, mysteries galore, vile plots, ancient gods and goddesses, and old world technology." -- Bookwraiths Reviews"My Year's Best list just had a new book jump to the top. D.P. Prior's book is that good. He has a lot to say, and one hell of a story to tell." -- Journal of Always Reviews"Several of the characters and the overall style of writing remind me of Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy. If you liked Abercrombie's trilogy I think you'll like this." -- Ray Nicholson (Amazon Top 1000 reviewer)"This book was just plain fabulous, well crafted characters presented in a well crafted story, that blends genres flawlessly. A tale written for adults who appreciate good writing." -- Timothy Cummings (Goodreads reviewer)"... an example of the type of deep, complex, but fast-paced fantasy that I crave." -- B. Throwsnaill"Shader is the perfect blend of religious justice and secular wisdom. A wonderful new character in epic fantasy. A must read." -- Urban Fanta-Seer"Shader's tale of redemption and Cadman's ambitious villainy becomes incredibly engaging as plots unfold. Combine this with Prior's exceptional writing skills, editing, characters and world building and you have a series unlike anything in the genre today." -- Media Man (Vine Voice)

Prior so perfectly by not only telling one hell of a story, but by foreshadowing all kinds of exciting action, supernatural events and well coordinated conspiracies delivered in the series. This is a mere tease, but necessary and worthy to stand on its own. You get to see how it all started, with Deacon and Aristodeus. This is important. My recommendation is to read this, then when you're finished buy all four books in the Shader series and read them in order. The quintet represents one of the best thumping reads around with complex plots, fabulously unique characters, rival conspiracies, megalomaniacs, battles, magic and classic Prior humor. If you like any of those, you'll love these books.Just start here!

A great Novella about young Deacon Shader By Scott morrison Ward of the Philosopher is a Novella about young Deacon Shader starting at his 7th birthday and the arrival of Aristodeus to start his training.Young Shader has no idea what this philosopher is training him for and the impact he will have on the future of his world along side some very interesting companions and sinister enemies.I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. To start I have loved all of Derek Prior's works to date, his ability to create a word filled with stories that can keep you hooked constantly wanting more is amazing and this is no exception regardless of its length.I started at the first instalment of the Shader series and have now read all of his works and there wasn't one that didn't leave me wanting more.I loved reading more about the start of Shader's training and it kept me wanting more all the way to the end. This is a great introduction to a great series and if this leaves you wondering after you have finished it Who is this philosopher? What does he have in mind for young Shader? Then give the Shader series a read, the order is below.1.Sword of the Archon2.Best Laid Plans3.The Unweaving4.The Archon's Assassin

Prior. This Kindle e-book was approximately 51 printed pages and sold for $2.98 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is intended to act as an introduction to the Shader Series which is comprised of (at this time) 4 books...1. Sword of the Archon2. Best Laid Plans3. The Unweaving4. The Archon’s AssassinIn this short work we are introduced to a young Deacon Shader at around the time of his 7th birthday. He's about to meet his future tudor and mentor, Aristodeus... a coming together that will turn young Deacon's world upside down and set a path for him that will become a lifelong endeavour.Impressions:It seems no matter what the topic or the size of the task, author Derek Prior can write stories that mesmerize and captivate his readers from the get go... and this short novella is no exception. I was hooked right from the first chapter where Deacon and his dog, Nub, dared leave the safety of their property, right through to the end where an intriguing and thrilling battle takes place.A short read; great stuff!Ray Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson
